Sid Meier’s Ace Patrol is a new iOS strategy game co-released by Firaxis and 2K games. It is now available as a free download on the Canadian App store, and is slated to go worldwide later this week. Since the game is made by the same studio behind the legendary Civilization franchise, it will surely live up to our expectations. Below is our testing review, or you can go to our sister site to check full review.
Sid Meier’s Ace Patrol is an air-combat strategy game in which the player controls an air force squadron to fight in historic WWI battles like Arras, Somme, Cambrai and Marne. In the British Campaign, the player will be controlling the renowned RFC 74 Squadron, namely the tiger squadron from the British Royal Air Force, to challenge German ace pilots over the European sky.
In single-player mode, it will be player versus AI. In Ace Patrol, the player progresses through the game by sending the squadron on various missions. There are over 120 missions in the game, including patrolling, bombing target base, and duelling with the enemies’ ace pilots. Upon starting a battle, the player will first promote a pilot as the squadron leader, then select a mission and assign pilots to the specific mission.
As a mission starts, the player can control an aircraft to make movements such as lever fly, climb, dive or roll by performing some actions on the round maneuver icons surrounding each of the aircraft. Tapping on an icon once is to preview the maneuver, and tapping twice is to confirm. Green icon suggests the aircraft will fire at the enemy targets. Pilots need to learn more maneuvers to have more movement choices in combat, and their machines need also to be upgraded so they can launch attacks that are more powerful and sustain longer under the enemies’ fires.
One thing that should be noted is that the player will only be rewarded with score points after completing a mission, and they do not need extra stuff to upgrade planes and learn skills. All WWI airplanes and historic ace pilots could be unlocked as players play the game.
The multiplayer mode supports the player to engage in one-on-one fight either with a friend on a single device (hot pad mode) or with an opponent via network. The game is somewhat similar to a chess game, with players taking turns to move their aircrafts to carry out the offensive or defensive missions. The key is to always think beforehand and learn how the opponents will move. On the other hand, there is a big problem in multiplayer mode since all upgraded planes and pilots cannot be used any more.
Sid Meier’s Ace Patrol is a free to play game with additional charged contents. The game provides four campaigns: British, German, French and American, and only the British campaign and the multiplayer battles are free to play. Most of the campaigns can only be experienced before they are purchased and unlocked.
The creditable aspect of this game is its top-notch cartoon-style graphics. Everything is stunningly beautiful and detailed, and there is no sign of any slowdown of frames in the dynamic scenes. It is one of the best-looking mobile games I have ever played on iPad.

To sum up, Sid Meier's Ace Patrol is a dynamic strategy game featuring fast-paced, entertaining combat that will surely please hardcore players and casual players alike.
