Blue Toad Murder Files: A Touch of Mystery is a detective game presented by Relentless Software. Cast in the role of a detective, you follow subtle clues to solve a series of puzzles until the criminal cases are closed, with justice well served. Are you the reincarnation of Sherlock Holmes or just a mediocre commoner? Come and prove yourself!
Blue Toad Murder Files: A Touch of Mystery is set in the small city of Little Riddle, a seemingly peaceful place in seclusion. But as its name implies, mystery, secrets, and plots are hidden inside. It’s time for you to uncover all of them. The game consists of three episodes for the moment, with three more expected soon. Each episode consists of twelve puzzles. Though you are allowed to play the puzzles in any order, it’s highly recommended to play them sequentially so that you can better follow the story and pick up on clues.
Your character is not equipped with stunning skills like in many other RPGs. Instead, your only weapon is your own mental ability. That makes you the true hero in Blue Toad. What do you think will make you a great detective? A cool mind, sharp observation, and a broad knowledge reserve are required to play. At first you choose one of the four detectives from the famous Blue Toad Agency to play as. Then a voice-over guides you through the whole story.
Take the first episode, Little Riddle’s Deadly Dilemma, for example. You come to Little Riddle on vacation. One day, the mayor was shot to death when talking with you. The murderer was not spotted on-site and the dead man left a diary by his side. You take it as the first clue to reveal the truth. During the investigation, you visit suspects where they work and talk to them for to gather more details about the murder. It’s during this process that puzzles keep coming out and you have to solve them. Luckily, there is no time limit so you can take as long as you need to think over each puzzle. If you fail, you’re allowed to retry as many times as you want, or you can skip it a puzzle if it’s beyond your ability. If you solve a puzzle in the designated time, you’ll be rewarded with a gold medal. Otherwise, you’ll get a silver or bronze medal depending on your speed. One thing I have to warn you of is that if you’re not doing well, be prepared to be mocked by the game. You’ll get generous praises as well when you have done a really good job!
Blue Toad is basically an all-embracing game. The puzzles cover almost all aspects of knowledge, including reading, listening, geometry, algebra, and geography. They are both interesting and challenging. For example, you may be asked to figure out the most efficient way to water the flowers, or to identify one’s path by listening to his steps, or even to solve anagrams. Besides the puzzles, there will be a occasional case reviews to test your memory as well as your observation. The reviews asks you several questions about what has happened in the story. If you are absent-minded as you play the game, you’ll definitely fail the reviews.
When all the puzzles are solved successfully, it’s time for you to make the final judgment and expose the murderer. In this way, the first episode comes to an end, and with a twist! That twist helps unveil the next episode. Once an episode is finished, its puzzle compendium and scene compendium will be unlocked completely so that you may play the puzzles again.
The game features a stylish interface design. At the beginning, all the episodes are presented in black-and-white photos framed grandly against a wine-red patterned drapery. If you pause in the middle of the game, there will be red theatre curtains drawn from both sides of the screen. Really impressive!
Though Blue Toad Murder Files: A Touch of Mystery is a game, you might also call it an animated story. It tells a wonderful story full of characters with distinctive personalities. They come from different walks of life and they each have their own stories to be told as the game progresses. The living environment is depicted in detail. From the flowing water, sheep and cows grazing on the farm, moving buses, houses and apartments, fences, bridges, and all kinds of well-functioning stores, we can see the devotion of the people behind this title. Blue Toad also benefits from a diverse soundtrack that is applied perfectly throughout the game.
For those who enjoy solving puzzles, I highly recommended trying Blue Toad Murder Files: A Touch of Mystery. Since it is an intellectually challenging game which calls for lots of thinking and calculation, it’s better to play it in a quiet environment.
